Shirley Temple is significant to Lovely because she represents a world where every problem is blissfully resolved and the resolution always involves a happy ending. Shirley embodies the type of lifestyle Lovely would like to possess. She views Shirley as a beautiful, angelic girl who receives love, attention, and devotion from every person who has the pleasure of meeting her. During the happy endings Shirley’s character cries out of joy. Lovely wishes her life contained reasons to cry because of pure happiness instead of sorrow.
Lovely feels unworthy of the type of heart-warming love Shirley Temple receives from the characters in her movies. Lovely stated, “We weren’t good enough for the kind of love that Shirley had every Sunday, the kind of love that makes the bottom lip quiver and mothers rush through crowds to hug you at the end of the movie.” (pg 26) Lovely feels if she obtains the qualities Shirley Temple possesses then she will deserve to be loved like Shirley Temple.
Hello Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI liked how you brought out the fact of Lovey not feeling worthy of the type of love that she saw Shirley Temple experience in her movies. This has a direct connection with low self-esteem that is a result of all Lovey's surroundings. I also like how you talked about that she was longing for tears of joy instead of the tears of sorrow that she had in her life.
Thanks for sharing,
Mandy Ericson
(: Hi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI agree that Lovey does feel that if she obtains the same qualities as Shirley Temple, she will gain the same love. To tell u the truth if I was a kid, I would probably think the same. Kids have a big imagination but they don't know that anything is possible.
When I was reading the homework assignment before reading the pages I thought I would be doing this one but once I read through the stories I couldnt come up with an answer for the question asked. I get it now and I enjoy the way you answered it. The way you said how Lovey was thinking about her outcomes was the exact same as I did, thinking that no one could have a happy ending like Shirley Temple.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your position that Lovey thinks if she attained some of Shirley's qualities that her life would be better. Its not Shirley's qualities that make her special, its how she lives her life with a positive attitude and how she treats other. I feel like Lovey needs a new perspective on life because if she lived her life with a positive attitude she would be happy. Shirley is a girl that is "beautiful, angelic girl who receives love, attention, and devotion from every person who has the pleasure of meeting her." Lovey sees this and wants nothing but this. Except all she needs to be happy is herself and self happiness. If Lovey was happy with her life everything else will come.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you have to say. In order for you to receive the same kind of love and attention as Shirley did, you have to be willing to give it as well. I know from my own experiences that being happy will make others around you happy as well. Showing that you care, opening your heart would allow them to show you the same exact thing in return.
ReplyDeleteIf you are not open to these kind of qualities, then how will someone know who you are as a caring person? If you are closed, then people would stay away rather than give you the attention that you would like to have.
